Tub surround replacement in Dallas: new walls around the tub you keep
Keep the tub, replace the three walls around it: old tile or panels out, soft board replaced, a waterproofing layer lapped over the tub flange, then new walls.

Surrounds and trims we install in Dallas include Kohler, Sterling and Swanstone panels, Daltile and MSI tile, and Schluter edges and membranes.
Tub surround replacement in Dallas removes the tile or panels around an existing tub, replaces any soft backer board, adds waterproofing lapped over the tub flange, and installs new panels or tile. Surround installation runs about 1,112 to 2,099 dollars per surround in 2026 market data before premium tile, and it usually takes two to five days.
Why the surround fails before the tub does
A tub can last decades. The walls around it often do not: grout cracks, caulk splits at the tub edge, water gets behind the tile and the board softens until tiles loosen or mold shows through.
Replacing the surround fixes that at the source. The old surround comes off to the studs, the tub edge is protected, soft board and any rotted framing are replaced, and a waterproofing layer goes on before anything decorative.
Then you choose the finish: a panel system from Kohler or Swanstone for speed and fewer joints, or Daltile porcelain with Schluter edges for a custom look.

The three surround options we install
Acrylic and Solid-Surface Panel Surrounds
Panel surrounds cover the three walls with a few large sheets instead of hundreds of grout joints, so there is almost nothing to regrout. Acrylic panels are light and quick; solid-surface panels are thicker, feel more like stone and can be trimmed to fit out-of-square walls. We still replace soft board and seal the substrate before the panels go up, and every joint and the tub edge are sealed with the manufacturer's system. Most panel surrounds are finished in two or three days.
Planning range, bathtub surround installation: $1,112 to $2,099 per surround before premium tile.
Tiled Surround Over New Backer Board
A tiled surround gives the widest choice of size, color and pattern. The old tile and board come off, cement board or foam board goes on the studs, and a sheet or liquid membrane is lapped down over the tub flange so water running down the wall ends up in the tub, not behind it. Porcelain is set with full thinset coverage, grouted and sealed, and the edges are finished with trim. Expect four to five days including cure time for the membrane and grout.
Surround With Niches and Grab Bar Blocking
With the walls open, it costs little to add what the old surround lacked. A recessed niche between the studs replaces a hanging caddy, and solid blocking behind the tile lets grab bars go in now or later without drilling into hollow board. We can also move the valve up for a taller showerhead, add a handheld on a slide bar, or replace a worn valve while the wall is open. Niches are waterproofed as part of the same membrane.
What moves the price of a new surround
The finish is one choice. The walls behind it decide the rest.

Panels or tile
Panels install faster; tile adds setting and grout time.
Board condition
Soft or moldy board and framing are replaced first.
Waterproofing
A membrane lapped over the flange is part of every surround.
Niches and blocking
Each niche and blocking run adds framing time.
Valve work
Replacing or moving the valve adds plumbing.
Tile choice
Large-format and patterned tile take longer to set.
Permits and a Dallas surround swap
A surround swap leaves the tub, drain and valve where they are, so the Dallas permit questions only start if the job grows. Moving the valve or adding a fixture brings plumbing and building permits, typically about two weeks to approve, and new wiring for a light over the tub needs an electrical permit, usually approved in a few business days. We tell you which applies before we start.

Doing a surround yourself versus having us do it
| Task | Doing it yourself | Having us do it |
|---|---|---|
| Panel kit install | Possible on sound, flat walls | Board and waterproofing handled first |
| Tile over old tile | Traps moisture and adds weight | Old tile removed, substrate known |
| Waterproofing at the tub flange | The step most often missed | Membrane lapped into the tub |
| Cutting around the valve | Easy to leave gaps that leak | Sealed and trimmed to the valve |
| Hidden rot | Found only after tear-out | Repaired before the new walls |
Tub surround questions
Something else? Call and ask, any hour.
Yes, if the tub is sound; we protect it during the work.
Panels are faster with fewer joints; tile gives more design choice.
Market data puts surround installation at about 1,112 to 2,099 dollars before premium tile.
We do not; the old surround and board come off so the waterproofing is new.
Two to three days for panels, four to five for tile.
Not for a same-place surround; moving the valve or adding wiring does.
If it flexes, leaks or is badly worn; see bathtub replacement.
