Shower remodels in Dallas, from a retile to a new pan, drain and valve
Same shower, same spot, rebuilt properly: a retile when the pan is sound, a new pan and liner when it is not, and a new valve while the wall is open.

Shower remodels here use Schluter pans and membranes, Daltile and MSI porcelain, and Moen, Delta or Kohler valves and trim.
A shower remodel in Dallas rebuilds an existing shower in the same footprint, either retiling over a sound pan or replacing the pan, liner and drain as well. Market data puts Dallas shower installations at 6,490 to 12,365 dollars on average; a retile on a good pan comes in lower, and a failed pan pushes the job toward a full rebuild.
Why the pan decides the scope of a shower remodel
A shower that looks tired can be a tile job. A shower that stains the ceiling below, or has soft floor at the curb, is a pan job. The difference is the price of the remodel, so we find out which one you have before anyone quotes tile.
We run the shower, check grout and caulk at the curb and corners, look for staining below or behind, and where there is doubt we plug the drain and flood the pan. A pan that holds water gets new tile; one that does not gets replaced.
The valve is the other decision. An old single-handle Delta or Moen body is often worth replacing with a pressure-balance or thermostatic valve while the wall is open.

Retile or full rebuild?
| Retile on the existing pan | New pan, liner and drain | |
|---|---|---|
| When it fits | Pan passes a flood test, board is solid | Pan leaks, slope is gone, floor is soft |
| What comes out | Wall tile, board, floor tile | Everything down to the subfloor or slab |
| Waterproofing | New membrane on walls, sound pan kept | New pan and membrane as one system |
| Flood test | Before we decide | Before we decide and again before tile |
| Schedule | About a week | Longer, set by pan cure and inspection |
| Cost | Lower | Higher, and the only real fix for a failed pan |
Three ways a Dallas shower gets remodeled
Retile on the Existing Pan
When the pan passes a flood test and the backer behind the tile is solid, the wall tile comes off, damaged board is replaced, and the walls get a fresh waterproofing membrane before new tile goes up. The floor tile is replaced over the existing pan, and new grout and silicone go in at every change of plane. It is the fastest shower remodel and the cheapest, but it only makes sense when the pan underneath is genuinely sound and holds water.

New Pan, Liner and Drain
A failed pan means everything above it comes out. We remove the old mortar bed and liner, check the subfloor or slab for damage, set a new drain, and build a new pan: either a mortar bed over a liner or a Schluter foam pan with a bonded membrane. The pan is flood-tested for 24 hours before tile. Two common causes of shower leaks are a pan that was never sloped properly and a liner cut too short at the curb.
Planning range, shower installation in Dallas: $6,490 to $12,365, average about $8,923; prefab as low as $500, large luxury builds up to $16,000.

Valve and Trim Replacement Behind the Wall
An older valve drips, runs hot and cold with every toilet flush, or has a cartridge nobody stocks. With the wall open we replace the old body with a new pressure-balance or thermostatic valve, add a diverter for a handheld if you want one, set the trim at a comfortable height and pressure-test every single connection before board goes back on. Moen and Delta parts rarely interchange between brands, so the trim is always chosen together with the valve body.
Planning range, shower fixture set (faucet and head): $50 to $900.

What moves the price of a shower remodel
Six items explain most of the spread between a retile and a rebuild.
Planning range, shower installation in Dallas: $6,490 to $12,365, average about $8,923; prefab as low as $500, large luxury builds up to $16,000. Market data, not a quote.
Pan condition
A sound pan keeps the job to a retile; a failed one adds a rebuild.
Damage behind the wall
Rotted framing or subfloor is repaired before new board goes up.
Tile format
Large-format porcelain and mosaic floors take longer to set.
Valve type
A basic pressure-balance valve versus a thermostatic valve with a handheld.
Niches and bench
Each adds framing and waterproofing.
Glass
A shower door or fixed panel is priced after tile is finished.
What we find behind Dallas showers
Hidden water damage, mold and subfloor rot are the most common surprises once a shower wall comes down, and older homes in areas like Irving often add outdated supply lines to the list. In Dallas the stakes are higher than a stained wall: a slow leak under a slab soaks the clay, and plumbing leaks are one of the known triggers for foundation movement here. That is why a shower remodel starts with finding the leak, not covering it.

Signs your shower needs more than new grout
Staining below
A ceiling or wall stain under the shower means water is getting past the pan.
Soft floor at the curb
Flex or give next to the shower points to rot underneath.
Grout that keeps cracking
Grout failing in the same corner usually means movement behind it.
Loose or hollow tile
Tiles that sound hollow have lost their bond, often to moisture.
Musty smell
A smell that returns after cleaning comes from wet material behind the wall.
Temperature swings
Scalding or cold bursts when a toilet flushes mean the valve is worn out.
Standing water
Water that sits on the shower floor means the pan has lost its slope.
Shower remodel questions we get
Something else? Call and ask, any hour.
Stains below, soft floor at the curb, or water that stands; a flood test confirms it.
About a week for a retile; longer when the pan is rebuilt.
We do not; the old tile and board come off so the waterproofing is new.
Not for a same-location rebuild; moving the drain or adding a circuit does.
Market data: 6,490 to 12,365 dollars on average for a shower installation.
If the wall is open and the valve is old, it is the cheapest time to do it.
If it stains a ceiling, yes; see shower leak repair.
