Steam shower installation in Dallas, built vapor-tight from the studs out

A steam shower is a sealed room that holds hot vapor. That changes the walls, the ceiling, the door and the wiring, and it all has to be right before the tile goes on.

Quick answer

Steam shower installation in Dallas adds a steam generator, a vapor-proof enclosure and a dedicated electrical circuit to a new or existing shower. The walls and ceiling are sealed with a vapor-rated membrane, the ceiling is sloped so condensation runs down the walls, and the door seals to the ceiling. Market data puts the national average around 4,300 dollars.

A sealed, heated room

What turning a shower into a steam shower involves

A normal shower only has to keep water in. A steam shower has to keep hot vapor in, which is far harder: vapor pushes into every gap, so the walls and ceiling need a vapor-rated membrane, not just standard waterproofing.

Three more things change. The ceiling is lowered and sloped so condensation runs down the wall instead of dripping on you. The glass reaches the ceiling with a transom or fixed panel so steam cannot escape over the door. And the generator, from Mr. Steam, ThermaSol or Steamist, sits outside the shower with its own dedicated circuit.

A bench, a handheld and good lighting make the room usable for a full session.

What the job covers

The three ways we build a steam shower

Converting an Existing Shower to Steam

An existing tiled shower can become a steam shower if its size and ceiling work. The tile generally comes off so a vapor-rated membrane can go behind the new tile and across the ceiling; standard shower waterproofing is not rated for steam. We frame a lower, sloped ceiling if needed, add a steam head low on the wall away from the bench, run a dedicated circuit to the generator location, and replace a standard door with full-height glass that closes the top of the enclosure.

Planning range, converting an existing shower to steam: $2,300 to $11,700; custom steam rooms $4,000 to $16,500.

Custom Tiled Steam Enclosure

A custom build lets the steam room be designed around its use: a full-width tiled bench, a sloped ceiling, a steam head placed where it will not blast anyone, an interior control panel, and lighting rated for the conditions. The generator is sized to the enclosure's volume and to the tile, because stone and tile absorb heat and need more capacity than acrylic. The whole enclosure, including the bench and the ceiling, is membraned and the floor flood-tested before any tile goes on.

Planning range, steam shower installation (national average): about $4,300.

Prefab Steam Shower Unit

Prefabricated steam units combine an acrylic enclosure, a sealed roof, glass doors and a generator in one system. They install faster than a custom build and fit standard alcoves, which makes them a practical choice for a secondary bathroom or a tighter budget. They still need a dedicated circuit, a proper drain and a level, supported floor, and the unit's roof must seal fully so steam cannot escape into the ceiling or attic above. We check all four before the unit is ordered.

What moves the price

What moves the price of a steam shower

The generator is a fixed cost; the enclosure and electrical decide the rest.

  • Conversion or new build

Converting a sound shower costs less than framing a new enclosure.

  • Enclosure size

A larger volume needs a bigger generator.

  • Tile and stone

Heavy tile absorbs heat and needs more generator capacity.

  • Electrical

A dedicated circuit and panel capacity for the generator.

  • Glass

Full-height glass with a transom or fixed panel to the ceiling.

  • Extras

Benches, interior controls, lighting and aromatherapy ports.

Permits for a steam shower in Dallas

Around Dallas

A steam generator needs its own electrical circuit, and in Dallas new wiring needs an electrical permit, usually approved in a few business days. If the shower also moves or a fixture is added, plumbing and building permits apply as well, typically about two weeks. We build those dates into the schedule so the tile crew is not waiting on an inspection.

What is included

What a steam shower installation includes

  • Enclosure sized and generator matched to it
  • Dedicated circuit, permitted and inspected
  • Vapor-rated membrane on walls, bench and ceiling
  • Sloped ceiling to shed condensation
  • Steam head placed away from the bench
  • Full-height glass sealed to the ceiling
  • Exhaust fan for the bathroom outside the enclosure
Timeline

How long a steam shower takes

A conversion of a sound shower usually runs about one to two weeks: tear-out, ceiling and circuit, inspection, vapor-rated waterproofing and flood test, then tile. Full-height glass is measured after tile and adds a week or two. A new custom enclosure takes longer because framing and the bench come first; a prefab unit is the fastest route.
