Toilet installation and replacement in Dallas, set right on a sound flange

A toilet swap is only as good as what it sits on: a flange at the right height, a floor that does not flex, and a seal that stays sealed.

Quick answer

Toilet installation in Dallas removes the old toilet, checks the flange and subfloor, replaces the supply stop and wax or waxless seal, and sets the new toilet level and caulked. A same-spot swap usually takes a few hours; a wall-hung toilet needs an in-wall carrier and a thicker wall, which turns it into a small remodel.

What a proper toilet replacement includes

Lifting an old toilet off tells you most of what you need to know. A dark ring on the subfloor means the seal has been leaking; a flange sitting below the finished floor means the seal never had a chance.

So we fix those first. A cracked or low flange gets a repair ring or spacer so the seal lands right, soft subfloor is cut out and replaced, and a new quarter-turn supply stop replaces the old one while the water is off.

The new toilet, whether a TOTO, Kohler or American Standard, is set on a fresh seal, bolted without cracking the base, leveled with shims where the floor dips, and caulked at the front and sides.

What the job covers

The three toilet installations we do most

Comfort-Height Replacement

Comfort-height, or chair-height, toilets put the seat about two to three inches higher than a standard toilet, which makes sitting and standing easier for taller people and anyone with knee or hip trouble. The swap is the same footprint as a standard toilet in most cases. We confirm the rough-in distance from the wall, usually 12 inches, before ordering, because a 10 or 14 inch rough-in, common in some older homes, changes which models fit without moving the drain in the floor.

Wall-Hung Toilet with In-Wall Tank

A wall-hung toilet mounts its bowl on the wall with the tank hidden inside, supported by a steel carrier such as Geberit's. It frees floor space, makes cleaning around the base simple, and lets you set the bowl at any height. It also usually needs a 2-by-6 wall to hold the carrier, a drain moved into the wall, and an access plate for the tank parts. That means opening the wall and, on a slab, reworking the drain, so it is usually part of a larger remodel.

Bidet Seat Installation

A bidet seat replaces the existing seat on most elongated or round toilets and connects to the toilet's supply with a T-valve. Heated-water and heated-seat models need a GFCI outlet within reach of the toilet, which many older bathrooms do not have. We check the bowl shape and size, fit the T-valve and a new supply line, and add an outlet on its own circuit under a Dallas electrical permit where the model needs power. Non-electric seats need only the water connection.

What moves the price

What decides the cost of a toilet installation

The fixture is only part of the bill. These six items decide the rest.

  • Toilet model

One-piece, smart and wall-hung toilets cost more than two-piece.

  • Flange condition

A cracked or low flange needs a repair ring or replacement.

  • Subfloor

Soft or rotted subfloor is replaced before the toilet goes down.

  • Rough-in

A non-standard rough-in limits models or moves the drain.

  • Wall-hung carrier

Opening the wall and moving the drain adds major work.

  • Power for a bidet

A new outlet needs a circuit and a permit.

Doing plumbing yourself in Dallas, and when not to

Around Dallas

Dallas lets a homeowner who lives in and has homesteaded the house do their own plumbing work, with a permit and inspection when the city's building code requires them, while electrical work needs a permit. A like-for-like toilet swap is a reasonable weekend job for some people. Moving a drain, adding a wall-hung carrier or running a new outlet for a bidet seat is where a mistake gets expensive.
