Medicine cabinet and bathroom storage installation in Dallas

Most bathrooms have more storage hiding in the walls than on them. We recess cabinets and niches between the studs and anchor towers and shelves so they hold.

Quick answer

Medicine cabinet and bathroom storage installation in Dallas recesses cabinets and niches into the wall between the studs, and anchors linen towers and over-toilet cabinets to the framing. The wall is checked for pipes, vents and wiring before cutting. A recessed cabinet swap usually takes a day, including the drywall patch and paint.

Space inside the walls

Where bathroom storage can go, and where it cannot

The space between two studs in an interior wall is about 14 inches wide and three and a half inches deep, enough for a recessed medicine cabinet or a niche that takes nothing from the room. That is the first place we look.

Not every stud bay is free. Plumbing walls carry drains and vents, exterior walls carry insulation, and some walls hide wiring. We check with a scanner and a small inspection opening before cutting, then choose the location that works.

Surface storage fills the rest: a linen tower beside the vanity, a cabinet above the toilet, shelves where they will not block a door. A Robern or Kohler cabinet with an outlet inside keeps chargers and electric toothbrushes off the counter.

What the job covers

The three storage upgrades we install most

Recessed Medicine Cabinets

A recessed cabinet sits flush or nearly flush with the wall, so it adds storage without projecting into the space over the sink. We locate the studs, confirm the bay is clear, cut the opening, frame a header and sill for a clean fit, and set the cabinet level and centered on the vanity. Wider cabinets span two stud bays, which means cutting a stud and framing a proper header. Cabinets with interior outlets or lighting get a new box and wiring under a Dallas electrical permit.

Linen Towers and Over-Toilet Storage

A tall linen cabinet beside the vanity or a wall cabinet above the toilet holds towels and supplies that would otherwise need a hall closet. Both are heavy when loaded and are fastened into studs, not drywall anchors. Over-toilet cabinets are hung high enough to clear the tank lid and the user's head, and towers are positioned so doors and drawers do not collide with the vanity or the bathroom door. We match finishes and hardware to the vanity wherever possible.

Recessed Niches and Built-In Shelving

Niches are built into walls during tile work: in the shower for bottles, beside the tub for towels, or as open shelving in a wall that has space behind it. In a shower, the niche is framed, lined with board and wrapped in the same waterproofing as the rest of the wall, with a slight slope on the bottom so water drains out. Open built-in shelving outside the wet zone can be recessed into a wall or framed as a shallow cabinet between the studs.

What moves the price

What moves the price of storage work

Storage is priced by what the wall needs, not only by the cabinet.

  • Recessed or surface

Recessing means cutting and framing; surface mounting does not.

  • Cabinet width

Cabinets wider than one stud bay need a header.

  • Wall contents

Pipes, vents or wiring in the bay mean choosing another spot.

  • Power in the cabinet

An interior outlet or light needs a new box and a permit.

  • Tiled niches

Niches in tiled walls are built during tile work.

  • Patch and paint

Drywall around the cabinet is patched and painted.

Local conditions

Adding storage in a Dallas bathroom

Around Dallas

In Dallas bathrooms, as in most, the wall behind the vanity and toilet carries the drains and vents, so recessed storage often ends up on a side wall instead. We check each wall before cutting, keep recessed cabinets out of exterior walls where they would displace insulation, and plan anything that needs new wiring as part of a permitted electrical job.
